LONG BRANCH, N.J. (AP) - He didn't even pay for the warranty. Police in Long Branch said a man allegedly stole a $20,000 diagnostic computer from a garage where he used to work, then returned the broken unit several months later - only to steal its replacement.
The man was been charged Friday with two counts of theft.

When he returned, he allegedly went to the garage to revisit former co-workers and even brought coffee and doughnuts. But he soon disappeared and employees noticed the old computer was back and the new computer was gone.

Did you know that a Florida Couple paid $155G Cloned Dog

MIAMI — A Boca Raton couple got a new dog, and it's just like their old dog. Not just the same breed and gender, but the same DNA.
Nina and Edgar Otto picked up their cloned yellow lab puppy at the Miami International Airport Monday night. Lancelot Encore was cloned from the DNA of the Ottos' late dog Lancelot, which died of cancer in January 2008. Guessing that pet cloning would one day be possible, the Ottos had DNA samples of their dog frozen five years ago.
The Ottos paid $155,000 in a San Francisco biotech firm's dog-cloning auction last July.
BioArts International created Lancelot Encore in South Korea, where he was born 10 weeks ago. The Ottos say he's the first single-birth, commercially cloned puppy in the United States.

Superior Court Judge Curtissa Cofield: “Negro Trooper” Arrest (Video)

Superior Court Judge E. Curtissa Cofield was arrested by Glastonbury, Connecticut police on October 10, 2008 for driving under the influence of alcohol. In a video released yesterday by Glasonbury police, she is seen addressing the officer booking her with racist language, calling him a “Negro trooper” and the N-word.
Curtissa Cofield
Connecticut’s Judicial Review Council released a video Monday of Manchester County Superior court judge Curtissa Cofield being booked by Glastonbury State Police. The Council is now investigating judicial misconduct charges against Cofield for using racist language against police officers booking her. Since Cofield is African American, this a very disturbing case of black-on-black racism.
She was being booked with sideswiping a state trooper’s cruiser with her BMW.
Some of the more disturbing quotes:
“We’re ghetto Negroes. We don’t have Triple-A.”
When asked if she took medication: “Yeah, I need to take anti-Negro, ummm …”
“Do you have a reading on my urine test, Negro trooper?” more

Did you know that Man Attacks His Lawyer In Court With Feces

SAN DIEGO -- A mistrial was declared Monday when a home-invasion robbery suspect smeared human feces on his attorney's face then threw more at the jury.
Weusi McGowan, 37, was upset because San Diego Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Fraser refused to remove Deputy Alternate Public Defender Jeffrey Martin from the case, prosecutor Christopher Lawson said.
At the mid-morning break, McGowan produced a plastic baggie filled with fecal matter and spread it on Martin's hair and face, then flung the excrement toward the jury box, hitting the briefcase of juror No. 9 but missing the juror himself.
"That juror didn't even see it coming," Lawson said.
The prosecutor said the defendant was compliant after the outburst and was taken into custody without further incident.
After lunch, Fraser dismissed the jury, telling them McGowan would have to get a new lawyer and that his trial would be delayed.
The judge scheduled a status conference for Feb. 9 and raised the defendant's bail from $250,000 to $1 million, finding he is a danger to the community.
Lawson said McGowan originally became upset last week when he claimed one of the jurors saw him in shackles as he entered the courtroom. Fraser dismissed all jurors who saw the defendant in shackles, the prosecutor said.
"The judge had been very fair," Lawson said. "All jurors who saw it were dismissed."
Fraser had also denied McGowan's attempt to represent himself, saying the request was untimely, Lawson said. more

St. Lucie firefighter who took severed foot charged with theft

PORT ST. LUCIE - The St. Lucie County Fire District firefighter accused of absconding with a portion of a man's leg from an Interstate 95 crash scene last year was arrested Monday on a misdemeanor theft charge, a Florida Highway Patrol spokesman said.Cindy Economou, 38, who wanted the remains to help train her cadaver dog, eventually resigned after taking Karl Lambert's foot and part of his leg from the Sept. 19 crash scene, officials said.FHP officials on Monday arrested Economou, of the 500 block of Aster Road, on a second-degree petit theft charge, which is punishable by up to 60 days in jail, in connection with the incident. The warrant lists the value of Lambert's foot at less than $100."I think the issue here for everyone was unfortunately the value of the foot," said Lt. Tim Frith, FHP spokesman. "This particular bizarre incident involving a body part is not listed in the statute as far as specifying it, so therefore it would relate back to some type of monetary value."
An arrest affidavit states Economou took the foot "with the intent to either permanently or temporarily deprive the owner, Mr. Lambert, the right to his property.""This is just so unbelievable, it's like a dream I'm in," Lambert said Monday. "I can't believe it's happening."Lambert is in a wheelchair, and said the portion of his left leg from about 5 inches below the knee is missing."Every person has his breaking point and I've had mine," he said. "Sometimes it just gets harder than normal."Lambert said the end of his leg still needs to get toughened up before he can get fitted for a prosthesis. He also needs to strengthen the extremity and be able to straighten it fully. Lambert, who was in the hospital for nearly a month following the incident, couldn't talk about some aspects of the situation on the advice of his attorney, Raymond Christian, who did not immediately return a call. more

Did you know Hartford mayor turned hhimself in for bribery?

HARTFORD, Conn. — Hartford's mayor turned himself in Tuesday on charges of having a city contractor do $40,000 in work at his home and paying for it only after being confronted by investigators.
Eddie A. Perez, a native of Puerto Rico and the first Hispanic mayor in the city's history, admitted "a lapse in judgment" but said he did not commit a crime. He pledged to remain in office.
"There is no excuse for it," Perez told The Hartford Courant. "I apologize for putting my family and my city under this situation."
Perez, the Democratic mayor of Connecticut's capital city since 2001, was charged with receiving a bribe and falsifying evidence.
The contractor, Carlos Costa, told investigators he believed he would be shut out of lucrative city contracts had he not done the work for free, prosecutors said Tuesday.
Costa, who was awarded a $5 million city streetscape contract, did the kitchen and bathroom renovations at Perez's home in 2005. Perez paid $20,000 for the work in 2007, but only after being questioned by a grand jury probing possible corruption in city government, prosecutors said. Neither Costa nor Perez obtained building permits for the work, prosecutors said.

According to warrants in the case, investigators found "numerous instances" where Perez intervened in matters to help Costa.
Costa was charged Monday with two counts of bribery, fabricating evidence and conspiracy to fabricate evidence in connection to the case.
Perez is charged with receiving a bribe, fabricating physical evidence and conspiracy to fabricate evidence. The felonies can bring a maximum sentence of five to 10 years in prison if convicted.
Perez did not return a phone message left by The Associated Press, but scheduled a 1 p.m. news conference to discuss the charges.
Perez grew up on Hartford's gritty North end and street gang leader before turning away from gang life in the 1970s and forming a neighborhood civic group.
Though technically powerless in the city's weak-mayor form of government, Perez upended Hartford politics by aligning himself with a Republican and a Green Party member to seize control of the City Council. In 2002, voters approved a charter change that shifted the power from the council to the mayor's office and made Perez the most powerful mayor in Hartford history. In 2005 he also took over the city's school system.
Another city hall employee, Edward Lazu, was charged with one count of receiving a bribe, fabricating evidence and three counts of forgery. more

Julie Amero spent years fighting porn charges after a computer malfunction.
But her life took a drastic turn on Oct. 19 of that year and now, four years later, Amero has a scarred reputation and said she has suffered emotional distress after facing serious pornography charges that destroyed her teaching career.
"Everybody out there should be afraid," the now 47-year-old Amero said on "Good Morning America" today. "If it can happen to me it can certainly happen to you."
The Back Story: Spyware Cause Porn Popups on Teacher's Computer
Amero started that fateful school day at Kelly Middle School in Norwich, Conn., by checking her personal e-mail and then she stepped out of the classroom to use the bathroom. While she was away from her desk, the computer began displaying a flurry of pornographic images.
She returned to find two students giggling at the computer screen. Amero said she tried to close the inappropriate images, but to no avail.
"The pop-ups never went away. It was one after another. They were continuous. Every time I clicked the box in the corner, the red box, the red X, more were generated," she said according to a court transcript. more

Did you know a California woman gave birth to eight babies?

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A California woman shocked doctors by giving birth on Monday to octuplets, believed to be only the second set of eight babies born in the United States.

The six boys and two girls were doing well and were in stable condition in the neonatal intensive care unit, said Dr. Karen Maples at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in the Los Angeles suburb of Bellflower.

But two needed some help to breath with ventilators, she told a press conference.

The eight babies were born nine weeks prematurely by Caesarean section over a five-minute period, stunning a 46-member medical team that was expecting only seven babies.

They weighed between 1 pound 8 ounces (680 grams) and 3 pounds 4 ounces (1.47 kg) and doctors initially identified them by the letters A through H as they were born.

"We decided to proceed with the delivery in anticipation of seven babies. We had done some drills, some preliminary dry runs," Maples said.

"Lo and behold, after we got to Baby G, which is what we expected, we were surprised by Baby H."

Maples said she had been following the mother, who was not identified, since the first trimester of her pregnancy.

Citing patient confidentiality rules, the hospital declined to say whether the mother had become pregnant through fertility treatments, which can raise the likelihood of multiple births.

"It was a shock, especially with the eighth baby," Maples said.

The mother plans to breast feed all eight babies, her doctors said.

The last octuplets known to have survived in the United States were born in Houston in 1998, in that case six girls and two boys. One of the babies, a girl, died one week after birth.

This home in Jupiter Island, Florida was purchased by former Lehman Brothers CEO and Chairman Richard Fuld and his wife Kathleen in 2004 for $13.75 million. In November, less than two months after Lehman Brothers collapsed intro bankruptcy, Fuld transferred the home to his wife for $100.
(ABC News)The move is garnering attention for what might be Fuld's attempt to avoid creditors as he could face civil lawsuits in the future.

It sounds like Fuld is "trying to save as many assets as he can," said Palm Beach attorney Jeffrey Zane, who does not represent Fuld. The move, he added, is basically an interfamily transfer that was necessary because Fuld, as a non-resident of Florida, was not safeguarded by the state's homestead property laws that can protect a family home from creditors.

After failing to find a financial savior to save it from collapse - which was a partial consequence of its heavy involvement in sub-prime mortgage investments - Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy Sept. 15, 2008. more

Did you know thsi 93 year old man froze to death in his home?

BAY CITY, Michigan — A 93-year-old man froze to death inside his home, an autopsy has determined, just days after the city limited his flow of electricity for not paying his bills.

Marvin E. Schur died "a slow, painful death," said Kanu Virani, Oakland County's deputy chief medical examiner, who performed Schur's autopsy.

Neighbors discovered Schur's body on Jan. 17. The indoor temperature was below 32 degrees at the time, the neighbors told The Bay City Times for a story Monday.

Schur had no children, and his wife passed away several years ago.

The man had almost $1,100 in unpaid electric bills, said neighbor George Pauwels Jr., who discovered Schur's body.

The utility installed a "limiter" device outside Schur's home on Jan. 13, said Bay City Manager Robert Belleman. The device limits electricity flow to the home and blows out like a fuse if more than allowed is drained. Belleman said he doesn't know if anyone talked to Schur to explain how to reset the device to restore power.

Did you know that man survived two days on whisky while trapped under his sofa

Joe Galliott first became ensnared by his sofa when he tripped over a phone cord during a power cut, sending him tumbling onto the sofa. This made the sofa flip over, landing on top of him and trapping him underneath.

While he was unable to get out from under the furniture, and had no food or water, Galliott was fortunate enough to have knocked a bottle of whisky within reach of his sofa-prison as he fell.

He told The Sun: 'I didn't have the strength to shift anything. I never had anything to drink except from that bottle of whisky, and I sipped on that.'

The 65-year-old was finally rescued from his ordeal when his grandson paid him a visit and called for help. He spent five days in hospital recovering from his sofa hell.

Did you know a man died from a gushot wound playing kick draw?

A 42-year-old West Virginia man died from a gunshot wound in the stomach early Saturday after playing a game of quick draw at a home in the Falls Mills area of Tazewell County, Sheriff H.S. Caudill said Saturday.

Wesley K. Miliam Sr., of Kegley, W. Va., died in the ambulance on the way to Bluefield Regional Medical center shortly after the 4 a.m. incident on Compton Road, said Randy Ann Davis, a spokeswoman for the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office.

After the shooting, deputies arrested Randy Miller Howerton, 31, of Bluefield, Va., who was participating in the game. Howerton was charged with manslaughter, shooting a gun in an occupied dwelling and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, the sheriff’s office said.

“What was really surprising was that there didn’t seem to be any alcohol at all,” Caudill said Saturday. “No drugs, no guns, it was very different, very surprising.”

Howerton did not know Miliam well, Caudill said.

“The man charged with the shooting lived at the house with a lady, and had for some time. They had friends over for the night and some of them knew” Miliam, Caudill said. “It was just reckless handling of a firearm.”

Howerton is being held at the Southwest Regional Jail in Tazewell without bond, Caudill said.

His prior felony convictions include larceny.

Man who shined laser into airplanes sentenced to 3 years
CLEVELAND — A Brook Park man who shined a green laser into the cockpits of airplanes and a helicopter last June will spend three years in prison after pleading guilty to those crimes and separate drug-dealing charges.

Justin Dewalt, 26, pleaded guilty to several felonies and was sentenced Friday, officials said.

According to the Cuyahoga County prosecutor's office, the laser incidents unfolded this way:

Dewalt bought a high-power laser off the Internet and brought it to a party on West 130th Street June 4. That night, flight crews of two planes about to land at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport reported that someone hit their cockpits with a laser.

One airliner carried about 20 people, the other about 100.

About an hour later, a laser hit the cockpit of a MetroHealth Medical Center helicopter flying a patient to the hospital from Elyria.

The helicopter pilot told Cleveland police the area where the laser came from and when a pilot for the police helicopter flew over to investigate, he, too, was hit in the eye by a laser that was coming from a moving car.

Cleveland police stopped the car a short time later and found Dewalt in the back seat with a laser.

Did you know a boys tantrum cause him to throws his teddy bear down hill, parents have to be rescued after they were trapped trying to retrieve it

A boy throwing a temper tantrum threw his teddy bear over a cliff, which resulted in a hillside rescue of his parents.
A teddy bear thrown in a temper tantrum turned into a full-scale search-and-rescue operation after the parents tried to retrieve the stuffed animal, but slipped down a steep Glendale hillside and needed to be rescued.

A 10-year-old boy named Soski threw his stuffed animal over a guardrail and down a hillside in the midst of a tantrum around 9 p.m. on Nolan Avenue near McGinn Drive.

"I threw my teddy bear, and then my mom went down to get it, but then she slipped," Soski said.

The child's father, Harry, went to help his wife, but he also slipped on the slick hillside. The couple found themselves 80 feet down the rain-slicked hillside, in need of help.

"We could not climb up because it was very slippery," Harry said, adding that he and his wife were worried because they had left their son alone atop the hill.

Soski ran to a neighbor's house, and they called 911.

Arriving firefighters then used ropes to pull the man and woman up to safety, and neither parent was hurt.

Did you know that Car dealers try to survive as economy, sales drop

NEW ORLEANS – At this year's version of the National Automobile Dealers Association convention, survival has passed maximizing profits as the focus of the annual event.
So as thousands of dealers from across the U.S. gathered Saturday in New Orleans, they were greeted by workshops entitled "Selling up in a down economy: Taking the bull by the horns" and "Tough times, tougher dealers: Saving your dealership's assets."
By almost all accounts, 2009 will be among the toughest years ever faced by the roughly 20,000 new car dealerships in the U.S., with sales of cars and lightweight trucks projected to shrink by as much as 6 million vehicles from the 16.1 million sold as recently as 2007. Sales last year were 13.2 million, down 18 percent from 2007, and December sales ran at an annual rate of around 10 million. Last year's sales were the worst in 26 years.
The workshops, said convention Chairman Jeff Carlson, are designed to help dealers cope with 2009 and make it to the day when the auto market bounces back.
"It's our charge to serve the dealers and to help them do everything that they can to remain viable," said Carlson, who runs two Ford Motor Co. dealerships in Colorado.

Baby’s phone call from indoor marijuana farm lands dad in jail

A baby playing with a telephone inadvertently called police to his house in westernmost Canada, and to his "very surprised" father’s marijuana growing operation inside, police said Wednesday.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police responded to an emergency 911 call in which the caller hung up without saying a word, Const. Janelle Canning told AFP.
The officers entered the White Rock residence, after knocks at the door went unanswered, she said.
"The father was very surprised to see us and insisted he hadn’t called police," she said. "The officers then observed his 11-month old child playing with a cordless phone, pressing buttons randomly."
The mystery caller was identified, she said. "It appears the baby called us."
During a routine search of the house, the officers also uncovered 500 marijuana plants in two locked rooms on the main floor.
The 29-year-old father was arrested and faces charges of production of a controlled substance and mischief. He is to appear in court in April.
The baby boy was removed from the home by the Ministry of Children and Family, and was later released into his mother’s custody.

Man sues Akron strip club for injury

Yusuf Evans says he still bears the pain of his first visit to an Akron strip club.
He says he got the boot — right in the nose, from the wicked flick of a dancer's foot.
It happened, he said, as he sat near the stage with friends inside the XTC nightclub on Brittain Road.
Evans, 37, has filed a lawsuit against the club and an unnamed dancer. He is seeking more than $25,000 for injuries he claims he suffered during his visit a year ago. The case has been assigned to Summit County Common Pleas Judge Brenda Burnham Unruh.
Representatives of the club did not respond to a request for an interview.
''I got injured and I shouldn't have gotten injured just going out and trying to show somebody a good time,'' Evans said in a phone interview. ''I have to live with this the rest of my life probably.''
Evans said he doesn't normally frequent strip clubs, but he made an exception when an out-of-town cousin visited Akron. He said he wanted to be hospitable to his guest and another friend.
The three men were seated near the dance stage while a stripper nicknamed ''Tiara'' performed her routine. The dance included a demonstrative kick, which Evans said caused the stripper's boot to fly off her foot.
Evans said he never saw the boot coming. The thick-heeledshoe, similar to the platform style worn in the 1970s, smacked him squarely in the face.
He said he was treated at a local hospital for injuries to his nose. Doctors have recommended surgery.
''That was my first time ever there. Isn't that crazy?'' he said. ''My nose got chipped on one side and I constantly lose the ability to breathe out of one nostril; the passageway gets clogged up.''
The lawsuit claims XTC management allowed improper attire to be used by their dancers. The dancers are required ''to wear certain articles of clothing'' and ''actively participate in stage dances'' and that during these routines, ''the stage becomes a hazardous area.''
Evans' attorney, John Brooks Cameron of Medina, could not be reached for additional comment.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A man was arrested late Wednesday after police said he stole a car and crashed into a building.
Investigators said Richard Glover stole the car on South Roys Avenue, located on the city's west side, just before midnight, 10TV's Patrick Bell reported.
He drove less than a mile before crashing into an Alcoholics Anonymous building on Sullivant Avenue.

Ernestine Little, who lives near the crash site, said she saw the incident.

Did you know that a man was arrested for abandoning 300 rats on the side of the road?

CK, R.I. — A Providence man who abandoned nearly 300 rats on the side of a road has been ordered to pay $1,000 restitution and perform 50 hours of community service.
Toby Duffany pleaded no contest on Wednesday to animal abandonment.
Authorities say the 22-year-old Duffany left 280 rats crammed into aquariums and cages by the side of a Foster road last month. By the time they were discovered Dec. 30, the animals had been there several days, 72 were dead and the survivors had resorted to cannibalism.
The living rats were euthanized by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Duffany said in court he got rid of the rats because they could not live in his apartment with his new baby.
An RISPCA official tells The Providence Journal the punishment was disappointing.

Did you know girls basketball team won 100-0?

DALLAS -- A Texas high school girls basketball team on the winning end of a 100-0 game has a case of blowout remorse.
Now officials from The Covenant School say they are trying to do the right thing by seeking a forfeit and apologizing for the margin of victory.
Samantha Peloza grabs a rebound in practice a week after their 100-0 win."It is shameful and an embarrassment that this happened," Kyle Queal, the head of the school, said in a statement, adding the forfeit was requested because "a victory without honor is a great loss."
The private Christian school defeated Dallas Academy last week. Covenant was up 59-0 at halftime.
A parent who attended the game told The Associated Press that Covenant continued to make 3-pointers -- even in the fourth quarter. She praised the Covenant players but said spectators and an assistant coach were cheering wildly as their team edged closer to 100 points.
"I think the bad judgment was in the full-court press and the 3-point shots," said Renee Peloza, whose daughter plays for Dallas Academy. "At some point, they should have backed off."
Dallas Academy coach Jeremy Civello told The Dallas Morning News that the game turned into a "layup drill," with the opposing team's guards waiting to steal the ball and drive to the basket. Covenant scored 12 points in the fourth quarter and "finally eased up when they got to 100 with about four minutes left," he said.
Dallas Academy has eight girls on its varsity team and about 20 girls in its high school. It is winless over the last four seasons. The academy boasts of its small class sizes and specializes in teaching students struggling with "learning differences," such as short attention spans or dyslexia.
There is no mercy rule in girls basketball that shortens the game or permits the clock to continue running when scores become lopsided. There is, however, "a golden rule" that should have applied in this contest, said Edd Burleson, the director of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools. Both schools are members of this association, which oversees private school athletics in Texas. more

Did you know that German Woman Missing 12 Years Found Alive in Swiss Woods

BERN, Switzerland — A German woman missing for 12 years has been found living in the woods on the outskirts of the Swiss capital with nothing more than an umbrella and tarpaulin for shelter, police said Monday.
The 52-year-old woman, whose name was undisclosed, appeared to be healthy after living in the simple shelter near the community of Bolligen for the past year.
Even the ranger who makes regular checks of the woods had failed to notice her before a hiker told police this month that he had seen a woman living there, said Juerg Mosimann, spokesman for the Bern police.
Bolligen's Mayor Rudolf Burger said he was told about the woman on Thursday and found her the next day in the makeshift tent she had constructed.
"She answered our questions and told us she didn't want any contact with her family," he said.
She conversed normally, but she also spoke of a mission that she had to fulfill, Burger added. He declined to elaborate.
Mosimann said it was unclear where the woman lived before she moved to the woods.
She is still living there, but the Bolligen Citizens Community that owns the woods will soon tell her she will have to leave, said community clerk Andreas Kohli.

"There's no point in waiting for months," Kohli said. "We are looking for an appropriate place for the woman in cooperation with the social services of Bolligen and the government of Bern."
The woman was reported missing in 1997 in a village near Potsdam, Germany, outside Berlin. She was identified with the aid of an information system shared by the 25 member nations of the so-called Schengen accord enabling passport-free travel in Europe.

Did you know that pilot accused of trying to fake death is jailed

MIAMI (Reuters) - A pilot accused of attempting to avoid financial fraud charges by faking his death has been transferred from a hospital bed to a jail cell in northern Florida, authorities said on Monday.
Marcus Schrenker, 38, parachuted out of his plane over Alabama and let it crash in Florida a week ago, investigators said. He was arrested a day later at a campsite and taken to a hospital with wounds to his wrists that apparently resulted from a suicide attempt.
Police said Schrenker was transferred on Sunday to the Escambia County Jail in Pensacola from a hospital in Florida's capital, Tallahassee, He faces federal charges of making a false distress call and purposely crashing a plane.
Schrenker was wanted in Indiana on financial fraud charges alleging he misled consumers who invested money in his wealth management companies and misappropriated hundreds of thousands of dollars of their money.
Last Monday, he radioed a distress call from his single-engine Piper, reporting that the plane's cracked windshield had imploded and that he was bleeding profusely.
Authorities dispatched two rescue helicopters, a Coast Guard cutter and two military F-15 fighter jets. When the jets caught up with the plane, the windshield was intact, the door was open and there was no sign of the pilot, investigators said.
The Piper crashed in a swampy wooded area north of Milton, Florida. When rescuers reached the scene, they found evidence including a book of campsites in America missing its pages on Alabama and Florida, and a bullet-point list scribbled on the back of a book that read: "cracked windshield, window imploded, bleeding profusely," a court affidavit said.
No one was injured and no structures were damaged in the crash, investigators said.
Schrenker parachuted safely to the ground near the Alabama city of Harpersville, got a police officer to give him a ride to a hotel and then fled, police said. He previously stashed a motorcycle near the hotel and got away before local police learned of the plane crash.
He was arrested last Tuesday at a campground in the north Florida town of Quincy.

Did you know that man cuts off finger in court over debt

LISBON (Reuters) - A Portuguese businessman said he cut off one of his fingers in court with a butcher's knife in an "act of despair" after a judge refused his offer to settle a 170,000 euro debt and said part of his farm must be sold.
"My intention was to tear up all the case papers and splatter them with blood so I could prevent the expropriation order for my land," Orico Silva was quoted as saying in local media after his drastic action in the court house.
Silva, who owns a 20 hectare (50 acre) farm in the central town of Figueira da Foz, was being sued by a company for holding onto a cash deposit on a land deal which had fallen through, the local newspaper said.
"I freaked out when the judge refused my offer to pay the debt and ordered the sale of part of my land. I told her I had a 1.2 million euro bank guarantee which would have allowed me to pay the debt," Silva said.
When he went to take the bank papers from his briefcase, he noticed the butcher's knife he had recently bought at a market and decided to cut off his index finger, using a court desk as a chopping board. He then cut the finger into three.
"I didn't feel anything, I could even have cut off all my fingers. It was an act of despair," he said.

Did you know if you reverse your pin number, the ATM Machine will call police?

The recent tragedy of a young woman being kidnapped and eventually killed; after she had repeatedly given the kidnapper a wrong PIN to her ATM card. If she knew the method below, she could have been saved. So I think it is important enough to let you know. Here you go. If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your Pin # in reverse. For example if your pin number is 1234 then you would put in 4321. The ATM recognizes that your pin number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the machine. The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to help you. This information was recently broad cast on FOX TV and it states that it is seldom used because people don't know it exists.

Did you know that 3.4 million people are stalked

(NEW YORK) — An estimated 3.4 million Americans identified themselves as victims of stalking during a one-year span, according to federal crime experts who on Tuesday released the largest-ever survey of the aggravating and often terrifying phenomenon.

Hiding from Untraceable
About half of the victims experienced at least one unwanted contact per week from a stalker, and 11 percent had been stalked for five or more years, according to the report by the Justice Department's Bureau of Justice Statistics. It covered a 12-month period in 2005-06. (Read "Letting Victims Track Tormentors".)
The study was described as a groundbreaking effort to analyze the scope and varying forms of stalking, which had not been featured in previous versions of the National Crime Victimization Survey.
The researchers defined stalking as a course of conduct, directed at a specific person on at least two separate occasions, that would cause a reasonable person to feel fear. The most commonly reported types of stalking were unwanted phone calls (66 percent), unsolicited letters or e-mail (31 percent), or having rumors spread about the victim (36 percent).
More than one-third of the victims reported being followed or spied upon; some said they were tracked by electronic monitoring, listening devices or video cameras.
Nearly 75 percent of victims knew their stalker in some capacity — most commonly a former spouse or ex-boyfriend/girlfriend.
Women were far more likely than men to be stalking victims, and people who were divorced or separated were more vulnerable than other marital categories. People aged 18-24 were more likely to be stalked than older people. more

Did you know two men were stoned to death for commiting adultry?

TEHRAN, Iran — Two men convicted of adultery were stoned to death in northeastern Iran last month but a third convicted man managed to escape, Iran's judiciary spokesman said Tuesday.
Ali Reza Jamshidi said the stoning took place in the city of Mashhad in late December but did not provide the names of the convicted men.
Under Iran's Islamic law, adultery is punishable by stoning, but such sentences are rare. International human rights groups have long criticized stoning in Iran as a cruel form of punishment.
Jamshidi did not describe how the stonings were carried out. But typically under Islamic rulings, a man is buried up to his waist, while a woman is buried up to her neck. Those carrying out the verdict then throw stones until the person dies. If the person manages to escape from the hole, he or she will remain free under Islamic law.
"Given that the third person managed to pull himself out of the hole, the verdict was not carried out," Jamshidi told reporters.
Stonings were widely carried out in the early years after the 1979 Islamic revolution that toppled the pro-Western government and brought hardline clerics to power. But in recent years, it has seldom been applied, although the government rarely confirms when it carries out stoning sentences. more

Did you know that maternity wards are forced to widen delivery-room doors for obese mothers

Maternity units have been forced to widen delivery-room doorways because of the increasing numbers of obese mothers.
Leading hospitals across the country have revealed they have had to expand frames by up to four inches to cope with overweight women.
Thirty out of 33 birthing centres in London have confirmed that the dimensions of their doorways have increased.

Hospitals across the country have revealed they have had to expand frames by up to four inches to cope with overweight women
While rising obesity is a concern in the general population, it is a particular problem for pregnant women because of the health risks to them and their unborn children.
Doctors say up to 50 per cent of women giving birth in some areas of the UK are now classed as obese, with the highest figures in Liverpool, Glasgow and London.
The news was revealed at a conference at the British Library last week held by Government-funded research body the Confidential Enquiry Into Maternal And Child Health (CEMACH).
Jo Modder, CEMACH’s clinical director of obstetrics and consultant obstetrician at University College of London Hospital, said she had witnessed instances where maternity staff could not fit women through delivery-room doors.
She said: ‘It’s not by much, only a couple of inches. But it causes problems and it’s not very dignified for patients.’
Hospitals have admitted spending £50million on equipment to deal with overweight patients, including £21million on stronger beds.
The CEMACH study found two-thirds of maternity units in London had bought new beds. Most could deal with weights of up to 250kg (40 stone), but one birthing centre reported that it had ordered a bed that had a safe working load of up to 300kg (47 stone).
It now appears that hospitals have also had to pay for structural changes. Siobhan Quenby, consultant obstetrician at Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust, said the hospital had been designed with wider beds in mind but that some brands of bed for larger patients still did not fit.
‘The hospital had to find a company that made delivery beds for larger women which would fit through our doors, even after the architect had widened them,’ she said. ‘I think the doors were widened by something in the region of around two to four inches. more

Did you know that a Bankrupt Ant Farmer Commits Suicide

A bankrupt Yilishen ant farmer killed herself by jumping off her apartment building in China’s northeastern city of Fushun on January 9, leaving behind her 13-year-old son and elderly mother. The woman, who was known by her Internet name Sister Blood and Tears, jumped off from her home on the third floor of the building at around 5 p.m. that day without leaving any message, said some ant farmers who later visited her family. The dead ant farmer and her families invested over one million yuan (US$ 146,200) on Yilishen Tianxi Group, purchasing and raising boxes of ants from the company for a promised high profit. After the company was exposed as a ponzi scheme in 2007, Sister Blood and Tears appealed and protested to local authorities but obtained no help. The desperate woman had had two unsuccessful suicide attempts since then.Sister Blood and Tears was only one of the 1.3 million frustrated investors, and far from the first ant farmer who committed suicide. Ant farmers blamed the authorities for first helping the company’s fraud and then manipulating the company into bankruptcy and not compensating the deceived farmers, many of whom had lost their life savings to the company. Farmers said their protests had been cruelly suppressed.“The government pushed Sister Blood and Tears to death,” said an elderly ant farmer. “They are ruining all of us ant farmers. We have no way out.” He also said the ant farmers are under the authorities’ surveillance. When Sister Blood and Tears was hospitalized after her first suicide attempt, the authorities sent officials and police to blockade the hospital to prevent information from going out, the ant farmer said. After her death, Sister Blood and Tears’ family informed some other ant farmers who then spread the news to many more. Some local ant farmers plan to hold a ceremony to commemorate the dead. more

Did you know that a 40 year old Woman allegedly tries to kill hubby with visine?

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - A 40-year-old southwest Missouri woman is accused of trying to kill her husband by spiking his tea with a half bottle of Visine eye drops. Greene County deputies said the woman was jailed Thursday night on $100,000 bond on a first-degree assault charge.
She was arrested late Wednesday after a co-worker told Greene County deputies that the woman told her about the plot to kill her husband.
A probable cause statement said the husband told investigators he'd been having stomach problems for the past two months.
The statement said poison control experts told a detective that ingesting too much Visine would lead to a coma and other "serious symptoms."
Authorities say the woman researched other means of killing her husband when the first attempt didn't work.
